CRUFTS 2007 – the worlds greatest dogshow

March 8th to the 11th 2007 had all British eyes turned to Birmingham, as the dog show and national event Crufts was on the agenda. Named after its founder Charles Cruft, who organized the first Crufts show in the Royal Agricultural Hall, Islington in 1891, the show has grown to unbelievable proportions. Occupying 20 acres of space and 5 gigantic halls, 2007 will physically be the biggest show yet in the event’s history. This year’s entry with 22,320 dogs was the second highest entry ever. 1000 overseas exhibitors from 32 different countries applies a somewhat international flair, and considering how hard it is to get a dog into the Great Britain these dog owners really are motivated. UK as a rabies free island has gone to great extents to protect their borders from the rabies, and some might say: competitors.

History
Crufts was in the early years run for personal profit, an aspect that appealed to Charles Cruft, who generated considerable profit to himself from the show. Today there are no privately owned dog shows in the UK, and permission to hold shows is granted by the Kennel Club which licenses only non-commercial organisations. In 1938 Charles Cruft died, leaving the responsibility of running the show to his widow. Three years later Mrs Cruft asked the Kennel Club to take it over in order to maintain the name of the show her husband had made world famous, and Crufts was sold to them. Crufts was moved to the Birmingham National Exhibition Centre in 1991, which proved to be a great success.
Crufts offers a varied program all day long, and there is constantly something going on: obedience, agility, flyball, all kinds of different demonstrations with dogs, international junior handling competition, heelwork to music, and meet the breeds. 500 trade stands offers pretty much everything you and your dog could wish for.  Then the crowd: 2006 drew the biggest audience in Crufts history with 143,000 visitors, 5000 coming overseas solely for the purpose of visiting the show, easily securing its place in Guinness book of records as the world’s largest dogshow. One of the overseas visitors this year was I. Arriving Birmingham International Airport I got on a train which took me to the showsite in exactly 20 seconds! I can hardly imagine an easier commute.


To get a seat ringside one has to be early, as they are occupied from start to finish. The miniature schnauzer judging started at 9am sharp, 154 miniature schnauzers were entered, and judge Frances Krall worked her way efficiently through the classes (an explanation of the UK show system can be found here).

After the judging everyone seems to be drawn towards the pubs in the hall, another British tradition (either tea or pints!)
Group judging can either be seen by purchasing tickets to the live event, or you can go home and watch it on TV. Broadcasted globally to 49 different countries, and with national TV coverage every night in best broadcasting hours (7pm 9pm Thursday to Sunday), the whole nation stays up to date with the group judging. BBC had more than 11 million viewers in 2006 for its Crufts broadcasts. I see a tendency of increased use of professional, usually American handlers for the top winners (Bill McFadden, Larry Cornelius, Geoff Dawson just to mention a few).

Due to the huge crowds there tends to be long ticket- and car-park-shuttle lines, but overall this is an extremely well-organized show. Crufts is truly a national event, supporting the UK’s reputation as the number one “dog country” in the world.  Any serious dog-fancier needs to go at least once in a lifetime…
